The UGC has asked that these colleges comply with the intent of the resolution passed by the United Nations in December last year, resolving to celebrate June 21, the Summer Solstice as International Yoga Day. This was following the indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi's recommendation during his speech at the UN General Assembly in September 2014, during his trip to the US.

The UGC sent a letter to this effect to the Chancellor's of all universities under its purview. The letter, sent on April 17, was written by Secretary Jaspal S. Sandhu, and said that the the government had decided that ensure that yoga day has a practical influence on society, the resolution would ensure that the very first International Yoga Day is "commemorated in a befitting manner". "You are, therefore, requested to kindly observe International Day of Yoga on 21st June, 2015 in your esteemed university and colleges affiliated to your university," the letter said.

The letter has also recommended that a spiritual quote by J Krishnamurthi be used as the motto.

"You may also ensure that the promotional films and other Information, Education and Communication (IEC) material on yoga should be distributed," it added.
